Considerations of Recycling Plastics

Article by Mark

Recycling is a very important step when disposing of many types of waste. It is a process that involves the conversion of a waste product into a form or a new product that can be used for something else. Recycling reduces the amount of waste and thus decreases the number of landfills required to dump solid waste. Plastics are man-made substances produced through various chemical reactions. It is common to various everyday products. It is easy to manufacture and readily available. Recycling of Plastics is becoming extremely necessary because of the various environmental threats that plastics pose. Some of the harmful effects of plastics include:

Blockage of sewage systems thus creating a water-logging situation, which is unhygienic, and causes many water-borne diseases.         A decrease in the percolation of rainwater thus causing significant reduction in ground water level.         A threat to many animals that mistake it for food. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a type of plastic used for making electricity cables, telephone cables, data cables, pipes, insulation etc. When this material is burned by municipal corporations for disposal, it releases dioxins which are highly poisonous. Ozone-destroying substances such as CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) and HCFCS (hydro chlorofluorocarbons) are released during production of certain plastics.

Significance of Recycling Plastics

Recycling plastics is one of the most preferred solutions for getting rid of plastic waste. It has the following benefits:

Saves Energy:

Recycling is a process of converting the waste material into a new product which can be used. It therefore saves energy as it uses less energy as compared to the manufacturing of a fresh product.

Saves Cost

Recycling plastics saves on the cost of reproducing new plastic materials.

Prevents Pollution

The production of any substance on a large scale is often accompanied with different types of pollution such as Air pollution, Water pollution, noise pollution, land pollution etc. The recycling of plastics minimizes all of them. Even when solid wastes are dumped in landfills they release various gases during their decomposition process which pollute the air. During the decomposition process various chemicals also leach into the groundwater thereby polluting it.

Reduces the Number Of Landfills:

Recycling plastics reduces the number of landfills which would have otherwise been required to dump them. This saves the space which would have been wasted for creating landfills.

Offers Employment:

The process of plastic recycling creates job opportunities as numerous people are employed to handle it.

Beneficial to Wildlife:

Many wild animals die every year when they eat plastics, accidentally mistaking them for food. It is a very common phenomenon observed among both terrestrial and marine animals. Recycling plastics reduces the number of animals who die because of ingesting plastics.
